What MOVIE(s) have you been....seeing? watching?

Introducing the boy to Big Trouble in Little China. Damn what a great great film. Absolutely peak Russel/Carter. And Kim Cattrall, what an absolute smoke show!

I don't normally want remakes but the whole time I'm thinking Chris Pratt for Jack Burton in a shot for shot remake with a bit more martial arts finesse than they could do back then. Jet Li as Lo Pan, Priyanka Chopra as Gracie, damn thing casts itself.

A few years ago rumors were circulating that The Rock was going to do a remake, Thankfully that seems to have died off. Some things are best left as is .

Showed one of my kids their first James Bond film, ever. I chose Casino Royale, which I had not seen in some time. It holds up, and is still awesome.

My son liked it, although he thought it was a bit on the long side. Which it is.

Best Bond film ever made, because it's the closest to Ian Fleming's original character (even Roger Moore thought so.) But, yes, it does drag a bit after the poker game until the finale.

Tonight I re-watched Aliens, again being a film I haven't seen in a very long time. And again I am very pleased to report that it holds up thoroughly and completely. I hope they never remake this film, but if they did, I really think the only thing that would look better is some of the space shots. Most of the camera work is up close, keeping the viewer on edge and scrambling to see the action.

They almost never show an entire xenomorph in frame.

It definitely helps that there were really no CGI effects back then. Guys in suits and animatronics so limited what could be done that it HELPS the film. Compare it to more modern Alien films where they show too much and it is dancing around the frame.

I'd like to see more Alien films, more in the vein of the comics than what we got with Covenant and Prometheus. Pick up with Newt, lose Ripley if you must keep established characters. Keep the budget low, the sets grimy, claustrophopic, and low tech. Though I do like the idea (however poorly explored in the films) of the alien being a hybrid of the xenomorph egg and the host DNA. Have an infestation break out on a planet, colony ship, or some sort of space zoo so you can have a wide variety of xenomorphs to deal with.

Huh, maybe a slimed down Rock. He has the personality but "human wall" Rock is kinda unbelievable as Jack unless he is literally pushing that truck cross country, Conan style

I heard the Rock once did a Spyhunter (based on that old arcade game) movie that actually got filmed, but then got binned for all eternity. Always wondered how that would have turned out. Tonight I watched Terminator Dark Fate, which is currently on Amazon Prime. It's... not bad. 6 out of 10 I'd say. Every second with Arnold on screen is better than the ones he isn't.

I liked it more than most. Arnie was great, though you gotta wonder about a woman so damaged by a man that she flees to an EMOTIONLESS TERMINATOR and lets him change diapers. Plus old lady Sarah Connor acts, looks, and sounds so much like my mother it is triggering

I'm also kinda over the constant rehashing of judgement day. Genisys at least played with actually retelling the original film, T3 sorta moved the plot forward, and Resurrection or whatever the McG one with Christian Bale was actually tried to play with the story.

I finished Enola Holmes last night off netflix. I'm not nearly as warm to it as others here, but since I'm FAR from the target audience it doesn't really matter. I thought Millie Brown did a fantastic job, totally charming and witty. The 4th wall asides were just right. But she was TOO charming, much like Superman as Sherlock. There has to be a penalty for spending your whole life cloistered up studying books and arcane science topics and neither of these two showed it. I also felt the "plot", such as it is, was relegated too far into the background. There was very little suspense or pressure throughout the film. I think it would have worked better had the case been an actual SH one that Enola worked on the periphery so it wouldn't have to be so simple. It's almost as if they just decided that the case was too complicated for the audience so they stripped it down to the bare minimum.

It also kinda undermines the purpose of railing against corsets and binding womens clothes if they happen to protect you from knife attacks and still allow you to perform jiu-jitsu and take out trained assassins. Just saying

From the comments I've been seeing about it, I think a lot of people unfamiliar with the books didn't realize it was a kid/family movie, and were disappointed. Like expecting Annie with an E or Little House on the Prairie to be serious historical dramas.

I didn’t know that either, and now I have a book series to pick up for my spawn in a couple of years. Sweet!

I'm kinda surprised we haven't seen a lot of the old kid detective books come back as series. Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators (I alwayed LOVED the idea that they won a chauffeur and car to use), Nancy Drew (though I think this one is getting rebooted on CW or something), even Tom Swift. Granted the optics on all of these series isn't en vogue at the moment, but I think they could be successfully relaunched in a more modern vibe (though a 50's-60's set show would be dope) without too much complaint.

Watched Over the Moon on Netflix. Incredibly charming, visually astounding, and very poignant. About a girl who loses her mother and decides to go to the moon to get her back (this is a fairy tale told to her, Chinese mythology I guess). It is wonderfully animated, about as visually colorful as COCO. It makes some REALLY trippy turns, so if you skip the trailer you are in for a ride.

I'm not sure where exactly this was made (china maybe, a joint studio?), but they nailed a very smooth, expressive, and realistic without being uncanny valley human animation. I'd put it right up there with the best of Disney (though if you had them side by side I'm sure there are levels of details in a major Disney/pixar release not seen in Over the Moon. My 4 year old loved it, though it raised a lot of questions about "old mommy/new mommy" that were hard to answer with my wife listening in the other room
