KeyForge: Call of the Archons - The World’s First Unique Deck Game coming soon

It doesn’t really feel collectible...it is really more like buying those Battle Decks I’m so enamored with. Each is self contained and finite, you only buy more for variety. I guess some people will chase certain combinations, but I think over time that will calm down, only flaring up when something gets billed as OP from event reports.

$92.50 is the going rate for a display on yonder eBay.

I do thank you for this. But I am also a cheapskate, and this protects me from most gacha nonsense. I know a lot of folks get all hooked on OVERWATCH loot boxes and what not, but I have never even been tempted to buy a single one. They cost money. Same goes for DESTINY silver and all that shit. I sold off MtG for an iPad years ago. Never touched HEROSCAPE outside of the starters. I'll be good.

(That said, I have a bunch of Marvel Dice game things and a box of that video/card/dude game from last holiday season)

But this one is Garfield, and seems good. I want, oh, say, 6 decks. Me, the kids, and a co-worker. I'll take two if I can find them, but the problem is I can't find them.

How does KeyForge compare to Epic?

I really didn't like Epic. It played like a less interesting version of Magic. Keyforge looks visually similar (creatures, artifacts, fire and forget cards, etc.) but it plays nothing like either. It's more about operating your engine as well as possible than punching the person on the other side of the table.

Keyforge is VASTLY superior to Epic on every count.

I am seeing decks available at most retailers...it’s the starter that is sold out. But you really do not have to have it, you can track everything with D6s.

You do have some D6s, don’t you?

I'd actually recommend skipping the core for this one. No one here is going to need the starter decks, and there's just one sheet of mediocre tokens in there that you can and should replace. The value proposition isn't there. Just snag a couple decks and go.

I decided to throwdown for a display pack that will arrive next week. I admit that I wouldn't mind a little harmless deck speculation to defray the cost.

Really want those Team Covenant tokens but man are they pricey.

I’d really like to stop thinking about his game for about 30 minutes today.

Flipped my starter for $85.

Bought 8 more decks at MM with that take.

They are going as high as $100.. People really want that token sheet and already obsolete rule book.

So I finally got to play last night. Nothing to really add, just ass my voice to the chorus of praise. Not taking the gimmick into consideration at all and judging it from a pure gameplay perspective, it feels like a milestone. The DNA of MtG is totally there, but it plays as if time had been spent refining and making quality of life improvements to its systems rather than adding more effects and keywords to keep the player base interested. I kept having these moments while playing where I thought, “Yeah, I guess you really didn’t need ______, you can just do this instead.” I had been prepared for the lack of resources and faction activation system, but the moment where I realized I don’t need to attack with my creatures against a life total had me saying, “Oh shit, no way.” It’s pretty brilliant.

Man, Richard Garfield.

Yeah, the more I play, the more I realize that this could be a legitimate milestone, as you put it.

The creature thing is really compelling. There is a strong emphasis on utility creatures. Sure there are bruisers made for attacking, but I find that theft and capture are more important. And that thing where everything can reap is super smart- there is no weak or underpowered creature because they all can give you progress toward the win condition.

The only knock I have against the game right now is that I think it is a little long. It’s longer than a typical Magic game. Not uncomfortably so, and good matches are exciting all the way to the end. But it is noticeable.

I don’t think this game replaces Magic, though. It is very different, and Magic remains the deeper and more complex game. I’m glad I just got back into Magic in part because it casts into relief the innovations that KeyForge offers.

Not sure why this link didn't show up before, but it's an ebay link to a double horseman deck selling for 1,600gbp...
