One tip though- apply the weapons and any other pieces before you spray- saves some trouble later.

Looks like necron compound is supposed to be thick? I feel like this is excessive, it's just big chunks that are dry as a bone.

Does yours look like that?
Mine just looks like really thick paint.

As an alternative, you can use Stormhost Silver. It’s Citadel’s brightest metallic. It works just as well, but it is more prone to error because it’s really thin (rather than pasty) as it is made for fine highlights. You absolutely must put an agitator ball in the pot or you will -never- shake it up enough to mix properly.

More painting this evening. Good fun. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, it's been a good bonding thing for evenings that doesn't involve a screen. My spouse had been doing the cars, I ground through the base plates. They still need some brown ink on them to dirty them up, maybe a little corrosion too.
Spouse getting the itch to start modding armor, guns, etc onto them. She insisted on drilling these out and separating the windshields, bottom, etc from the top so they could be primed and painted more easily.

I'm still hammering away on terrain and other components so I haven't really done any actual work on my cars. I keep finding some cool new pieces of terrain I can make, so I need to just finish what I have and be done. Here are some of the cars I have waiting for me:
I have specific plans for each of those cars, so I'll probably be at it for a while.
That's a dangerous path to follow. Pretty soon you'll want to strip the paint and chrome plating from the cars (obviously to reveal the fine details that the thick, original paint obscured) to repaint them completely. My progress so far:Gary Sax wrote: She insisted on drilling these out and separating the windshields, bottom, etc from the top so they could be primed and painted more easily.
It all started with the three police cars in the center of the top row, since I wanted them to have similar black and white paint schemes and didn't want the existing emblems showing through my paint. Because I need it smooth for the Highway Patrol waterslide decals I got from some guy in Australia...

The specialty GW paints really do make you look good.
I still need a basic set of base color paints and I doubt they need to be citadel, though I do have the money. Thoughts?

I picked up most of the paints Michael recommended. Can't wait to try them out.
A base set of colors doesn't have to be Citadel. Two other main brands are Vallejo and Army Painter. I personally don't have much experience with Citadel paints because I like the bottle droppers that the other brands come in. I prefer Vallejo colors over Army Painter, but either are fine. All three brands sell basic color sets. Just depends on what colors you want and how much you want to spend. Vallejo has some 16 color sets for $45, Army Painter has a 50 color set for $90, and I know Citadel has a bunch of smaller sets as well.
(Note: Vallejo has two lines, Model Color and Game Color. They are functionally the same, but the Model colors are geared more toward military models while Game colors are matches for Citadel.)
