Right from the outset, I should state that I’ve never...

Stonemaier Games are back with their latest big release. This time, it’s a card game, based on Pierce Brown’s books of the same name, Red Rising. It’s a game of strategy, timing, using your faction’s powers, and uniquely, ending the game with a strong hand. Sounds strange? Read on.

Since writing the review, I've started the first book in the series and I'm enjoying it. I'm still enjoying the game too, and looking forward to getting some more plays in with 3 and 4 players.

So can you provide 1) a quick list of color issues you identified that could impede proper play; 2) if there are mitigations for each of them in the collector's edition; and 3) whether you have any color blindness issues that have affected you in other games prior to this.

I have no color-blindness issues identified, but used to attend a regular gaming session where the lighting was marginal. This made for people making blunders on occasion, which can . . . disenchant you from the game if you're prone to such things. My old group had a guy with significant color blindness and he would mark up his copies of games to assist with it.

I'm gonna be honest. This is a rookie mistake, something Stonemaier should be looking at in the rear-view mirror.

1. The colours of the metal cubes are close. Gold/bronze and pink/purple are quite similar at a glance. I also found myself looking twice at the gold and yellow cards.

2. Every card has the name of the colour printed on it, and the gold cards have shiny gold embossed on them. For the cubes, not easily. If you were playing up to four players it wouldn't be an issue if you chose blue, green, pink and gold, for example.

3. I have no colour blindness that I know of, and haven't had any problems before.

If I had any issues with colours, I'd definitely pick the standard edition. The plastic cubes and pieces are bright, bold, standard colours.
