No preparation? I like the sound of that.

It's sort of like the gaming equivalent of a trust fall--exhilarating, humbling, and with a non-zero chance it could fail and fail very badly.

I love the Gang Hideout stats in Blades in the Dark, such that our D and D group spent the first three sessions trying on various hideouts for size. We’ve settled on a Buffyesque library.

I also stole the "group levels as an adventuring guild" and "NPC faction status" for my DCC campaign straight from Blades. My players really like it as that's where they see the impact on the world around them, not just their own personal gains. When the Wizard they screwed over a few adventures back comes looking for his revenge, they see his name at -2 status and saves me recapping why this guy gunning for them.

Yes! The promise of having a secret hideout awakened all sorts of weird childhood feelings I didn't know still existed.

Great point--playing in a dynamic, reactive world vs. a campaign setting sourcebook feels like the difference between a real-life jungle gym and a painted backdrop.
