Cutting OSB subfloor (sorry Pete) with a new, $10 40tpi blade set to the right depth, wood properly supported. It is smoking and binding something fierce.

Edit: I had the blade on backwards. I swear that is what the arrows on the blade indicated. I'm going to start a Youtube channel called "The ADHD home repair guy" and people can just watch me get frustrated and do everything poorly.

gis for "smoking and binding"

Put in a Nest thermostat and hooked it to my Google home speaker.

I also installed a new shower fixture in my bathroom and didn't have to tear apart the wall to do so. My hands got all cut up from the metal mesh running through the original plaster. SharkBite connectors are wonderful.

So I got the subflooring put in today. I need to finish screwing it in, but my low-end impact driver runs dry after about 20 screws, and using my wobbly-chuck Dewalt is torture. It tends to drive the screws down to the depths of hell.

So now we are going to put down some adhesive tile, but I think I need to put in self-leveling compound first, because that fake wood subflooring is pretty rough. Maybe put down 1/4" finished plywood?

I also shaved my head today because it's the first day of my sabbatical, and I want to approach it with the single-minded devotion of David Carradine in Kung Fu.

Also some opportunities for 1979 Star Trek cosplay.

Vinyl sheet on the floor is ideal in a bathroom because water can't get through in the event of a spill. It's also a lot easier to put down and to replace if you want to change the look. The new stuff is really nice -- I did my new house's kitchen in it and all the relatives thought it looked really impressive.

It's also very forgiving of uneven floors, though if it's really uneven you'll notice it with your feet. A layer of plywood fixes that if you're concerned about it.

Yes. 100 of 100 times do sheet vinyl over adhesive tiles. Those tiles should NEVER be used in wet spaces as the seams get moldy within a few years no matter how anal retentive you are about cleaning.

It’s easy to lay, ultra forgiving, and you can float it with mastic over valleys and peaks on uneven floors. Just make sure you have a 4” level area around the commode flange or you’re going to have a rodeo potty when you reinstall.

ALSO, no turtlenecks while shaven bald. My buddy did it and I was not the only one to liken him to a broken condom.

Don’t be that guy

A layer of underlayment over the subfloor is usually used when installing vinyl flooring. Just make sure you only nail/screw it to the subfloor, not the joists, otherwise you get squeaks. An old school trick is to put a layer of tar paper between the subfloor and the underlayment. It reduces noise and squeaks and is also something of a water barrier, so if your toilet or tub over flows a bit, and works it's way through your finished flooring, most of it will be stopped at the tar paper layer.

I think I'm going to go with underlayment plus locking vinyl planks. I don't think I'm skilled enough to put down sheet vinyl and not totally screw up the commode flange hole.

I'm spatially dyslexic and require a lego-style interface. I have photographic proof of this, but I'm too embarrassed to share it. I should only be allowed to use hand tools to minimize the rate of damage.

We are going to rip out the shower and redo everything but the walls in about three years. The planks have a membrane and are waterproof, so I guess we'll wait and see what happens. The last laminate floor I put in was 13 years ago. I need to replace some of the damaged planks.

One of the sink shutoff valves began leaking onto my brand new subfloor. Fortunately it happened while I was right there. I think the vibrations from using the reciprocal flush cutter or my failing jig saw dislodge something in the crumbling shutoff valve. I've replaced a toilet shut off in the past that was soldered in place, but forgot how I replaced it.
