So this was unexpected

Proper figures! Humans! Empire! Dogs of War! Brettonia! None of this weird spikey goth bollocks and flying sharks!

Extremely weird decision! I can see a commercial reason for it, since as they mention their most popular video game fantasy properties are straight old world and don't map well into the Sigmar universe.

As someone who, crucially, does not play the game itself, I vastly prefer the old world in terms of them and flavor.

Hah! I guess Sigmar isn’t working out.

Obviously I don't know the sales figures, but it's also possible they're simply looking to tap into a nostalgia market of older, wealthier gamers.

GW seems to be taking great pains to make the analogy of:

Horus Heresy is to WH40k
as
this new "Warhammer: The Old World" is to Age Of Sigmar

So no admission of failure, simply trying to present it as additional product.
(Of course when has GW ever admitted to failure in the past, so maybe.)

Hrm. Cool, I guess? There's no way I'm going back to a (massively) collectible game, despite my eternal love for the setting and system (still with 8000+ points of fully-painted Skaven in the basement...) But maybe there will be people playing the old rules in a couple years? It'd be nice to get a game or two in, for sure. Interestingly, the only 40K army that I held on to is the Nuns with Guns and they had a big announcement for them yesterday, too. Everything's coming up Milhouse!

Had there been any update on what this is going to actually mean?

They said this is still 3+ years out. I would be AMAZED if there is anything they say this year other than 'still working...'

Watch them do a full reveal tomorrow at LVO.
