  • Fired

A year ago I received a Kindle Fire for my birthday.  I hadn’t asked for one and in a lot of ways I really didn’t want one, but I toyed with it a bit and realized that I kind of liked it.  It was quicker to get web access on it than it was my laptop, was more mobile and generally lasted longer on a battery.  Over a six week period it grew to be a pretty big presence in my life, and my traditional e-ink Kindle was more or less set aside.  I pull it out now and again and I still think it’s better for text-to-speech than the Fire, but I’ll be honest, if I had opened it three days ago to find it broken down I wouldn’t be heartbroken.  The Fire would suffice to replace it.

  • First Adventure for Ravenloft & Wrath of Ashardalon Campaign

    Good day everyone,

Without wasting much time or space I'll get right to it. Attached is the first adventure in a three part campaign I've played around with creating for the D & D Boardgame system. This campaign requires the use of both Castle Ravenloft & Wrath of Ashardalon. All of the instructions you'll require for setup should be quite clear.

  • First time teach

I have now spoken quite a bit about how to teach board games to people. Those articles were about teaching games that you have already played yourself and therefore know relatively well. However, when you buy a game, you will be faced with the difficult task of teaching the rules for the first time, before having played it yourself even once.

  • Fischer's Law

My reading material at the moment is Daniel Dennett’s book on evolution – Darwin’s Dangerous Idea. It’s a fantastic book dealing with both the philosophical and scientific aspects of Darwinism and ought to be mandatory reading for anyone obtuse enough to doubt the very real fact of evolution, or to try and substitute some form of creationsim. But enough politics; in a footnote in the book I found, oddly enough, a very interesting gaming reference.

  • Fixing What's Not Broken

HeroscapeBasesI have a review already written for tonight. It's pretty good, too, with plenty of crude, base humor and some truly tasteless nods to cultural insensitivity. I actually had it ready to post last night, and then something happened.

    Wizards changed the HeroScape bases.

  • Flashback Friday - Eclipse

Love it or hate it? Do you still play it?

Eclipse designed by Touko Tahkokallio was, released in 2011.

It is a 4X game in which you must lead your civilization to prevail over the others. When it was initially released it was heralded as a streamlined and refined Twilight Imperium 3 "killer."

This game is amazing, it’s an innovative and highly evolved design that represents the very best of both American and European design concepts. So fucking what if there’s not some lame ass back story that tells you the history of the fish folks of Flingflarn or whatever. So what if there’s not piles of cards that tell you how to interact with other players. Tell your own stories and bring your own politics, and this game is just as bloody, ruthless, and violent as any classic DoaM game, but with a fraction of the bulk. It’s a bonus that the game also features an absolutely brilliant economic system that makes for lots of interesting decisions and tough choices. My Hellfire Club crew universally proclaimed TI3 dead after we played this.

On this site Eclipse was a divisive game with some people praising highly while others reviled it.

This was noted by Charlie Theel noted in his blog:

I know you're all groaning but Eclipse is one of my favorite games and I'm willing to stand by that until I die.

Which camp are you in. Love it or hate it? Do you still play it.
