Playing Negotiating/Diplomacy Games with Strangers... Better?

So I'm playing a couple of diplomacy heavy games (specifically games of Here I Stand). My finding, having a played a number of these games, it that for me playing these games online is a better experience than playing them in person. The leaving the room thing and talking for 15 minutes is more intimate, but I don't think it allows (at least for me) for some of the more diabolical and intricate backstabs and screwjobs. Which is of course what we all love about those types of games. The contrast between cooperation and conflict and how they switch so quickly.

On top of that, I think there's an element of anonymity that helps these games. Maybe if I had a great group of likeminded beer drinking conflict gamers I'd feel differently. But I feel like my game groups, which meet infrequently and play euros, and even my wargame buddy, are far too serious and brow furrowed to take getting gang banged in a diplomacy game well or with the right spirit. If someone did it to me, I can honestly say I would just laugh it off and enjoy the spirit of the game.

It's tough. I love this type of game but I don't have a group I think would have fun with it and leave their egos and pride off the table and just bring their trash talk and scheming minds. Beyond the length I just don't have the right mindset of people--and I've had a hell of a time finding that type of player!
