My original idea for the Wonderland's War Premium Chip review was to write this cute little program in BASIC. Then I realized I haven't programmed in BASIC since I was taking a break from playing M.U.L.E. on my Commodore 64. After a couple of hours of “brushing up” and actually trying to make a functioning program I said “Screw it.” Even I have limits on how far I will go for a joke.

Set

The first question “Do you love Wonderland's War?” is pretty easy to answer. If you are here, reading a review of premium tokens for Wonderland's War, you likely are at least very fond of it.

Wonderland's War is a game where you spend roughly one-third of the play time either pulling tokens from a bag or adding token to a bag (and that is not counting the amount of time you just stick your hand in the bag and rustle them around to ward off the bad juju). While the tokens included in the base game are perfectly fine, one does tend to worry about wear and tear over the long term. Hell, isn't the entire sleeving industry based on this? This leads to the second question you should ask yourself when considering the premium tokens “How often is this going to get played?” I can only answer that for myself and my response is “As many times I can bring this to the table and not face a rebellion from my gaming group.”

Empty

The tactileness of the premium chips is possibly the biggest attraction of this upgrade. Just the heft and feel of the chips resonates in a real and immediate way. Their layout also makes it simple enough to decipher if some of the quests or chip powers that are triggered by having different colored active chips have been met.

In Action

As with any expansion, storage is always a concern. The Premium token expansion is literally built to fit directly into the base box. Even with my “custom” speedy set-up (When I tear down a game of Wonderland's War, I prime the player bags for the next play by putting all of that characters applicable tokens, markers and cubes into the character bags), it still all fits in the base box with only a tiny bit of lid lift.

Little lift

Of course, if you choose to pack it the recommended way, its fits flush.

Flush

The biggest barrier to picking this up is the price. At 69.00, it is literally the price you might expect to pay for an entire game. Deluxe Tokens are definitely a luxury. But in a game that focuses so heavily on the bag building element, it's one that ups the entire Wonderland's War experience.

I appreciated the BASIC program and that you numbered your lines in such a way to give yourself plenty of room to add more later.

Same. Brought back many memories and not the horrible ones associated with COBOL.

As for the chips, yeah, I think it's a worthwhile upgrade mostly because of the sensory effects. Like I said about War Chest , a brilliant game just for its design, but a step above most bag builders just because the pieces easily satisfy that fidget of many gamers that they end up applying to cards (to the latter's detriment), you can do the same thing and get almost the same tactile response with the plastic chips from WW. But, yeah, you gotta be willing to justify the cost of a whole other game (if not two) for something that is still a cosmetic. I traded for my copy of WW which is the upgraded one and the previous owner hadn't even punched the cardboard tokens or standees, so they're all still in sheets under one of the inserts (I dumped one of them as basically unusable because it made setup and tear down longer than needed (e.g. I do what you do, which is keep all the starting chips for each faction in their bags.))
